WEEK 19: DESCRIPTIVE ESSAYS (Pilar Victoria Martínez)



Descriptive essay: this type of essay aims at helping you illustrate something to your reader in a way that they can see, feel or hear what you are talking about. This is all about describing or summarizing a topic.
Narrative essay: this is used to tell a story from a defined point of view, often the author’s, so there is feeling as well as specific and often sensory details provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence.
Discursive essay: this type of essay is used to investigate an argument by offering two opposing perspectives to establish the author’s opinion on a topic and persuading one’s stance by exploring the reasons why each view may or may not be valid through a calm and neutral tone.


The essay includes an introduction, body and conclusion centered on a chosen theme, in this case, the advent of ecommerce. The writing style includes descriptions and opinion and its main objective is to relate the qualities of the topic.

To improve my English, I have started to watch a Netflix series in its original version called ‘The Umbrella Academy’.

Some other phrasal verbs are: beat down, get up, give away, back into, set about, be away, count down, etc. By searching of the internet, I have found a complaint letter in which many expressions to complain appears: Dear Sir/Madam:  I am writing to express my strong dissatisfaction  at the disgraceful treatment I received at the Walford Branco of Stimpson’s Electronics yesterday afternoon. Firstly, the product I was given  was not the model I had asked for . By browsing the net, I have found this text and underlined the formal expressions in it: T he inequity in the distribution of wealth in Australia is yet another indicator of Australia's lack of egalitarianism . WEEK 21: TELLING THE TRUTH (Pilar Victoria Martínez)

By doing some research, I have found some sites which tells the characteristics of someone lying. Here is a list of those I found more important: Being vague and offering few details. If the speaker seems to intentionally leave out important details, it might be because they are lying. Vocal uncertainty. If the person seems unsure or insecure, it is probably because it’s lying. Indifference. Shrugging, lack of expression and a bored posture can be signs of lying since the person is trying to avoid conveying emotions. Overthinking. Failing to provide specific details when a story is challenged or seems to be thinking too hard to fill in them. Grooming behaviors such as playing with hair or pressing fingers to lips. Regarding to the film Liar, Liar , I have watched some scenes of the movie and everything I can tell is that white lies are sometimes necessary to avoid hurting people’s feeling.
