Imagen
Sadly, we get to the end of this adventure. I had enjoyed doing some of the exercises because I found them curious and original. So, it gave me a better understanding of the subject Lengua Inglesa IV. I think this is a good way to learn more about English because the exercises are entertaing and light. Kind Regards, Pilar.

WEEK 29: INTELLIGENCE (Pilar Victoria Martínez)

I have found this text about the results of an experiment and underlined the examples related to reported results: The following observations were made as a result of experiments conducted by Casey Hospital with respect to four types of E.Coli bacterial strains. The graph illustrates that 5mg./ml. of Chloramphenicol stopped the growth of two strains of E. Coli; EC 1 and EC 3. It also illustrates that the 5 mg/ml of Chloramphenicol had little to no effect on the EC 2 strain of E. Coli and had a minimal effect on EC 4 strain of E. Coli as the colony sizes were near maximum of the standard result. This shows that 5 mg/ml Chloramphenicol is an effective antibiotic against EC 1 and EC 2 strains of E. Coli. In order to improve my English, I have done some rephrasings in order to prepare my final exam of Lengua Inglesa.

WEEK 28: CONNECTING WORDS (Pilar Victoria Martínez)

By browsing the net, I have found this text and underlined the formal expressions in it: T he inequity in the distribution of wealth in Australia is yet another indicator of Australia's lack of egalitarianism . In 1995, 20% of the Australian population owned 72.2% of Australia's wealth with the top 50% owning 92.1% (Raskall, 1998: 287). Such a significant skew in the distribution of wealth indicates that, at least in terms of economics, there is an established class system in Australia. McGregor (1988) argues that Australian society can be categorised into three levels: the Upper, Middle and Working classes. In addition, it has been shown that most Australians continue to remain in the class into which they were born (McGregor, 1988: 156) despite arguments about the ease of social mobility in Australian society (Fitzpatrick, 1994). The issue of class and its inherent inequity , however, is further compounded by factors such as race and gender within and across t

Some other phrasal verbs are: beat down, get up, give away, back into, set about, be away, count down, etc. By searching of the internet, I have found a complaint letter in which many expressions to complain appears: Dear Sir/Madam:  I am writing to express my strong dissatisfaction  at the disgraceful treatment I received at the Walford Branco of Stimpson’s Electronics yesterday afternoon. Firstly, the product I was given  was not the model I had asked for . The new X-401 calculator was demonstrated to me by the sales assistant, and I agreed to buy it. However, on unpacking my purchase, I saw that I had been given the smaller X-201 model instead. Furthermore, this calculator was much cheaper than the model I requested and paid for. It did not have many of the features I needed and was much more basic than the one I was shown to begin with. To make matters worse,   I was deeply offended by the behaviour of the sales assistant when I went back to the shop to complain

WEEK 29: INTELLIGENCE (Celia Mantilla Fernández)

I have found this text and underlined the examples related to reporting results:  General and specific knowledge scores   were analysed  separately by 2 (Instruction Condition) x 2 (Test Phases) ANOVAs with repeated measures on the second factor. The results for general knowledge question scores  indicated   there was no difference between the instructional groups, F(1,20) = 2.65, MSe = 288.82. (The .05 level of significance is used throughout this report.) The test phases main effect  indicated  a significant difference, F(1,20) = 11.77, MSe = 180.10, demonstrating an improvement over the two instructional phases. WEEK 28: CONNECTING WORDS (Celia Mantilla Fernández)

I have found a text and underlined the formal expressions on it: UN urges universities to be catalysers of sustainability Although young people are driving a global wake-up call on climate change and the need to reduce our carbon footprint, many universities are struggling with the concept and agenda of ‘greening’ and their achievements to date have been “ scattered and unsystematic ”, UN Environment, the leading global environmental authority , warned this week.  In a  report  published on its website, it says some schools and universities are leading by example and reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy and becoming “hotbeds of activism on the defining issue for a generation”. But, it says, “while some n oteworthy exemplars of university sustainability initiatives exist around the world, there is a need to maximise the potential benefits by encouraging their replication in as many universities as possible globally.”  [...] Some examples of linking devices

Here we have a chart with some of the most used phrasal verbs: Some others are: Carry out, Give out, Hold out, Turn off, Look around, Get along, Take down, Take up, Carry on, Put off, Work out... Searching the internet I have found this complaint letter: Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing today to complain of the poor service I received from your company on June 12, 2016. I was visited by a representative of That Awful Company , Mr. Madman, at my home on that day. Mr. Madman was one hour late for his appointment and offered nothing by way of apology when he arrived at noon. Your representative did not remove his muddy shoes upon entering my house, and consequently left a trail of dirt in the hallway. Mr. Madman then proceeded to present a range of products to me that I had specifically told his assistant by telephone I was not interested in. I repeatedly tried to ask your representative about the products that were of interest to me, but he refused to deal with my questions.

WEEK 30: GAME OVER (CLARA MONTALBÁN PEÑALVER)

I have found this blog pretty useful for the understanding of all units. Furthermore, I think it was really enjoyable due to the great amount of practical exercises and the searching that we had to do. I would not change anything at all.  Best wishes.

WEEK 29: INTELLIGENCE (CLARA MONTALBÁN PEÑALVER)

Some expressions from the text related to the reported speech are the ones in bold. Finally, I have not done much to improve my English this week because I have been studying for my exams. Hope you can forgive me.

WEEK 28: CONNECTING WORDS (CLARA MONTALBÁN PEÑALVER)

Imagen
I have found this text on the Internet and I have underlined the words that are formal expressions: "Saving money is a manageable thing for most people. The key, though, is understanding how to go about it in a proper way . It takes some motivation, organization, and determination . Sometimes it seems like a mystery, though, as it appears money slips out of the hands of some people. That is why “How to save money” is one of the most common questions on the internet. This essay will deal with five ways to save money in a practical way: record your spending, create a budget, make a plan for saving money, have a savings goal for certain items, and decide on your priorities. There are more methods to consider, but these are a good start for those who are lost in the forest of saving money. [...]" Examples of linking devices: It is important to mention that I have been studying for the final exams to improve my English and to pass all of them!

WEEK 27: COMPLAINING (CLARA MONTALBÁN PEÑALVER)

Imagen
This is a chart with some important phrasal verbs that we use in everyday language: This is a complaint I found on the internet and I have uniderlined some expresions: My central complaint is that the hotel fell far short of the description in the brochure. We had booked two double suites, in rooms 213 and 214. Although the rooms were billed as four-star accommodation, they were very cramped, and the furnishings were worn and dirty. In addition, the shower in room 213 did not work . The hotel’s grounds, described in the brochure as “pleasant, tranquil, and spacious,” were in fact bordered on two sides by a very busy main road. The swimming pool was closed the entire week for repairs. When we spoke to your representative, Tracey Mills, she promised to try to get the shower fixed, but this took an unacceptably long time to happen —three days from when we first complained. I asked her to fill out an accommodation report form detailing these issues and I enclose a copy for your

WEEK 26: ESSAY WRITING (CLARA MONTALBÁN PEÑALVER)

Links that explain essay writing: - https://student.unsw.edu.au/writing-your-essay - https://www.citewrite.qut.edu.au/write/essay.jsp I believe that the most difficult part of constructing an essay could be the imagination and creativity to develop interesting and well-formed paragraphs. Added to this, knowing the structure of the essay is essential to add coherence and cohesion. During this week I have been chatting with an Online friend from England. This helps me to improve my English day by day.

WEEK 25: UNDER THE WEATHER WITH THE WEATHER (CLARA MONTALBÁN PEÑALVER)

"Two people died and another person went missing on Sunday (May 5) as high winds and heavy rain pummelled Italy and neighbouring France. In Sicily, an unexpected gust of wind killed a 65-year-old German kitesurfer on the Islands of the Stagnone nature reserve, smashing him against a parked car as he tried to go into the sea, Italian media reported. Three French mountaineers were rescued from Monte Rosa in the Alps at around 4,000 metres altitude as temperatures fell as low as -15 degrees Celsius ( five degrees Fahrenheit) , Italian media reported. (...) Wind and rain further south also destroyed vineyards and greenhouses and flooded fields in the northern regions of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna, farmers' union Coldiretti said." ( https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/two-dead--one-missing-as-freak-weather-hits-italy--france-11506280 ) "The month of May has arrived, but a cold front is on its way, according to weather officials . An “ out

WEEK 24: NATURAL WONDERS (CLARA MONTALBÁN PEÑALVER)

This is a descriptive text which talks about Dublin: "Dublin has been in the news since the 9th century, and while traces of its Viking past have been largely washed away, the city is a l iving museum of its history since then, with medieval castles and cathedrals on display alongside the architectural splendours of its 18th-century heyday, when Dublin was t he most handsome Georgian city of the British Empire and a fine reflection of the aspirations of it s most privilege d citizens. How power was wrested from their hands is another story, and you'll learn that one in its museums and on its walking tours." I have underlined the expressions that make the text descriptive. This week I have practised English when I studied for my Lengua Inglesa IV Writing exam.
