Grand Canyon is an exceptionally deep , steep-walled canyon in north-western Arizona, United States. Formed by the eroding action of the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is about 443 km (227 mi) long, 8 to 29 km (5 to 18 mi) wide, and more than 1.6 km (1 mi) deep. The entire canyon is extremely beautiful , containing towering buttes, mesas and valleys within main gorge. A spectacular section of the canyon, together with plateau areas on either side, is preserved as the Grand Canyon national Park, which receives about 4 million visitors a year. The Grand Canyon stretches 349 km (217 mi) across the state’s Colorado Plateau and averages 16 km (10 mi) in width. Beautiful rock formations of layered limestone, sandstone, shale and other rock rise from the canyon floor, which is more than 1.6 km (1 mi) deep. This formation is known as “The Alligator”. The Grand Canyon cuts steeply through an arid plateau region that lies between about 1.525 and 2.745 m (5,000 and 9,000 ft) above sea l

WEEK 23: PERSUASION (Celia Mantilla Fernández)

Some expressions used in order tu persuade are: - Come on. - Give it a try. - Try them on. - You´ll enjoy it. Go. - It will be fun, I´m sure. - You wouldn´t find them twice, come on! - You´ll never feel sorry about it. - Won´t you... please? - Not even for me/ for my sake? - I´m begging you. Will you? - Are you quite sure you won´t consider...? - You´re not going to let me down, are you? - I really think it would be a pity if we didn´t... Hyphothesis text: Bullying unfortunately happens every day. Many times kids are ashamed to tell anyone that they are being bullied. Also, there are parents out there who believe that bullying is just a part of growing up. The truth is that bullying  has become  increasingly more severe over the years. In addition to this, there are other forms of bullying that exist today, such as cyber bullying. I think that there are a few reasons that parents do not stop bullying. First, they  may  not know that it is happening. Second, they

This is a text that describes the Niagara Falls: The three falls are part of the Niagara River, which forms the U.S./Canada border all the way from the city of Niagara Falls up to Lake Ontario. These falls are an internationally recognized natural place and are perfect to live an ultimate adventure. American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are on the American side of the border, and Horseshoe Falls is on the Canadian side. Bridal Veil Falls is much narrower than the other two. Just a small gap separates it from American Falls, so many people don't even realize that the two falls are separate. The waterfalls are 170 to 180 feet tall , but Horseshoe Falls is more than twice as wide as American Falls. From this place, spectacular views can be appreciated. It is one-in-a-lifetime experience! Several islands sit in the river near the falls. The largest , Goat Island, actually adjoins the American and Canadian falls. It's accessible by car and has picnic areas, viewing areas

These are some expressions I found to persuade someone: Come on.  Give it a try.  Try them on.  Believe me, you’ll have fun times.  Don’t be a spoilsport.  It will be fun, I’m sure.  You’ll  enjoy   it. Go.  You won’t regret it.  This is once in your lifetime, don’t waste it.  It’s your only chance, try it.  You wouldn’t find them twice, come on!  You’ll never feel sorry  You won’t regret it.  This is once in your lifetime, don’t waste it.  It’s your only chance, try it.  You wouldn’t find them twice, come on!  You’ll never feel sorry  You won’t regret it.  This is once in your lifetime, don’t waste it.  It’s your only chance, try it.  You wouldn’t find them twice, come on!  You’ll never feel sorry  about   it. Would it be possible for you to …? Won’t you …, please? Why don’t you …? Please! Not even for me/for my sake? Just this once! You’re not going to let me down, are you? How I can persuade you to …? Could you/Couldn’t you be per

WEEK 22: NARRATIVE ESSAY WRITING (Pilar Victoria Martínez)

Imagen
These are two links I found in which narrative essays are explained: https://www.iwriteessays.com/essays/what-are-the-characteristics-of-a-good-narrative-essay https://essay-lib.com/narrative-essay/ One of the principal characteristics is that it must catch the reader’s attention. It is an essay that tells a story and it requires the author to call upon personal experiences that relate to the topic and clearly convey the reader what happened, how it happened and why the event was meaningful and relevant. A narrative essay includes an introduction, the plot, the relevant character profiles, the setting, the climax and the conclusion. This type of essay differs from the discursive essay in that the first one tells a story that can be either fictional or real-life and the author can write what he wants related with the topic, while the second one informs about an idea, are always based on real things and the author needs to prove his point and support it by a list of powerful

WEEK 21: TELLING THE TRUTH (Pilar Victoria Martínez)

By doing some research, I have found some sites which tells the characteristics of someone lying. Here is a list of those I found more important: Being vague and offering few details. If the speaker seems to intentionally leave out important details, it might be because they are lying. Vocal uncertainty. If the person seems unsure or insecure, it is probably because it’s lying. Indifference. Shrugging, lack of expression and a bored posture can be signs of lying since the person is trying to avoid conveying emotions. Overthinking. Failing to provide specific details when a story is challenged or seems to be thinking too hard to fill in them. Grooming behaviors such as playing with hair or pressing fingers to lips. Regarding to the film Liar, Liar , I have watched some scenes of the movie and everything I can tell is that white lies are sometimes necessary to avoid hurting people’s feeling. In order to improve my English, this week I’ve practicing some

WEEK 20: RAVE REVIEWS (Pilar Victoria Martínez)

Imagen
This is a review I found on the Netflix animated series “Hilda”: https://www.polygon.com/2018/9/26/17905808/netflix-hilda-best-animated-series-kids-right-now In the first and second paragraph, the author talks a little about the origins and mixes his personal opinion with facts about the style of the series. In the 3 rd and 4 th paragraphs, he talks about his daughter and personal life. Then, the author explains the plot of the series, the animation and the principal characters, opening the way for some paragraphs on the first two episodes which contains a lot of spoilers. Then, he compares Hilda with other cartoons and to finalize, made an analysis on its approach. This week, in order to improve my English I started reading “A Skinful of Shadows” for a literature project.

WEEK 21: TELLING THE TRUTH (Celia Mantilla Fernández)

Imagen
According to this web  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/hope-relationships/201507/6-ways-detect-liar-in-just-seconds  we ca find out if someone is lying by watching their body language, that is because they tend to pull their body inwards and/or shrug their shoulders if they are lying. Also if we observe the facial expressions we can see how some people change their facial coloration or flare their nostrils, bite their lips, blink rapidly... If we focus on tone and cadence we will notice that they sometimes change and sentence structures can become more complex as the liar´s brain works on overdrive to keep up with the lie. Finally, keep track of when they stop talking about themselves, this is because people that are lying tend to remove themselves from their story and start directing the focus on other people. In relation to the film "Liar, liar" I believe that saying always the truth can be really bad and sometimes white lies are necessary in order to
